Sponsored Contributed Article Passing the Torch: Sustaining the Legacy of Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard By Chris Rennie, Agilent Technologies In September 2013, Agilent Technologies announced that it will spin off its electronic measurement business as a standalone company. On January 7, 2014, we announced the name of the spinoff: Keysight Technologies. We expect to complete the separation in early November 2014. Between now and then, numerous changes will occur behind the scenes and some will be public as Agilent bids us bon voyage. A popular quote seems appropriate: “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” Just as Hewlett-Packard lit the candle that is Agilent, the flame from Agilent will light the new candle called Keysight. In the yellow glow of candlelight, a few questions may be flickering in your mind. In the paragraphs that follow, I’ll shed some light on the following: the meaning embedded in the new name, the key things that will remain the same, two positive elements that will be different, and evidence of our ongoing commitment to customer success. Defining the meaning embedded in our name The process of finding or creating a name for a new company can be quite challenging. For us, the journey was not always smooth; however, we kept traveling until we arrived at a name that clearly conveyed the value we strive to bring to our customers. The meaning embedded in Keysight comes from two English words: “key” and “insight.” On its own, “key” has two relevant meanings: indispensable or essential, and a means of access. Next, “insight” is the power of seeing as well as possessing vision and perception. When brought together as Keysight, this coined word connotes the ability to offer essential insights that help our customers understand and unlock the changing technology landscapes they face. Chris joined Hewlett-Packard in 1985. In 1999 the measurement part of the company separated to become Agilent Technologies. During his 28 years with Hewlett-Packard and Agilent, Chris has held a variety of European sales and management positions. He is currently the Europe, Middle East and Africa General Manager for services and support in the Electronic Measurement Group. He was previously the Northern Europe Sales Manager and had a focus on the semiconductor and wireless industries across Europe. Chris is the UK Managing Director designate for Keysight Technologies. This is the Electronic Measurement Group of Agilent which is planned to spin off as a separate company in 2014.
