ModelSource Modelsource is a unique new component library that contains more than 80,000 component schematics and footprints of semiconductors, passives and electromechanical components from leading manufacturers. it is available via the Designspark website for any engineer to freely access, with components available in more than 20 different formats for use with other popular pCB design software packages. Modelsource is also integrated into Designspark pCB Ver- sion 4, greatly enhancing the software tool’s existing library. These new component libraries have been created by a third- party company – accelerated Designs – in compliance with the IPC-7351 specification (Generic Requirements for Surface Mount Design and land pattern standard). additionally, Model- source contains more than 30,000 3D models in 24 formats for widely used mechanical 3D software tools. engineers can use Modelsource to search by manufacturer or RS part number where a specific part has been chosen for a design. When the choice of device is open, an attribute-driven search can be used to quickly identify components before downloading the model for use in the design tool. DesignSpark PCB – Further Background and Key Features launched in July 2010, Designspark pCB has set a new stan- dard for pCB design tools. engineers have gained access to a fully featured free pCB-design tool with no practical restrictions or limitations, making it ideally suited for both commercial and student or hobbyist use. Developed by rs, in conjunction with number one systems, Designspark pCB has attracted engi- neers worldwide to the rs website since the launch of the tool. The number of downloads of the schematic capture and pCB layout software has now reached almost 160,000. Designspark pCB comes with a range of functions and features that are unique to any free-of-charge pCB design software. Users have access to a full suite of video tutorials, examples and an industry-leading component library. engineers can create schematics based on any size of pCB with any num- ber of layers, and import designs created in other pCB design software. fully (auto) routed and design-rule checked designs can then be exported in a number of file formats including IDF, DXf and standard gerber/manufacturing format, giving engi- neers faster progression into mechanical design. Key features of DesignSpark PCB: • No practical restrictions: up to 1m2 board size and up to 14 pCB layers • Auto-placement and auto-router • 3D board view • Interface to simulation tools (LTSpice, Tina, etc.) • Built-in design calculators (track/via resistance, power dissipation) • Comprehensive Design Rule Check • Output files: Gerber, Excellon, DXF, IDF, component positions for automated assembly (csv, txt) • Full import from Cadsoft Eagle (PCB, schematics, libraries) • Component and circuit element grouping www.electronics-eetimes.com Electronic Engineering Times Europe December 2012 7
