DESIGN & PRODUCTS Development platform for telematic applications Operating from 6 to 32V DC in the extended operating temperature range of -40 to +85°C, the PCAN-GPRS Link is a development platform for telematic applications. An API al- lows simple integration of functions within a specific application envi- ronment. The PCAN-GPRS Link supports the evaluation of FMS and Bus FMS data (Fleet Manage- ment System) for which it produces consumption related vehicle data. There are two program- mable microcontrollers within the unit which process internal vehicle data and run the GPRS. The DTCO info interface also allows the connection and processing of a digital tacho with access to information such as driver identification and driver working time. The U-blox 5 GPS module with its 50 chan- nels and over 1 million correlators, yields a position accuracy of 2.5m. There is an optional expansion to allow additional data to be processed, output and recorded. These include temperature and movement sensors, barcode scanners, RFID readers, displays, and WiFi or Bluetooth connections. The unit is supplied with a programming example in the form of a Linux daemon for x86 Debian. This daemon receives the data from the PCAN-GPRS Link and writes them to a mySQL database. Data can then be visualized using a php script based on Google Maps and AJAX. Comsol www.computer-solutions.co.uk Touchscreen controller supports gloved finger operation on 7“ displays Atmel has released a series of automotive-qualified maXTouch controllers for in-car control systems, bringing today’s smart- phone experience into contemporary cars, even for drivers wearing gloves. The mXT143E and mXT224E touch control- lers are designed for small automotive touchscreens and touchpads up to 7 inches in diameter such as center stack displays, navigation systems, radio human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and rear-seat entertainment systems. By addressing smaller screen and touch-pad sizes, the chips complement the company’s growing family of automotive-qualified touchscreen controllers that support screens/pads from 2 to 12 inches in diameter. The mXT143E and mXT224E are fully automotive- qualified according to AEC-Q100. Embedded functionalities include high-temperature behavior and reliable operation in harsh environments and with gloved fingers. The high signal- to-noise ratio of 80:1 makes these devices ideal for very noisy environments. The mXT143E and mXT224E embed X/Y posi- tion calculation as well as post-processing algorithms such as eliminating unintended touches. With touchscreens and pads based on these new maXTouch controllers, users can perform multi-touch gestures (pinch, stretch, etc.), while unintended touches, such as a resting hand on the screen, are rejected. The devices feature true 12-bit touch functionality with independent X/Y tracking for up to 10 concurrent touches in real–time.
